The Center for Progressive
Leadership (CPL) is a national political training
institute that develops diverse leaders who can effectively advance progressive political and policy change. CPL has trained almost 3,000 progressive leaders through intensive, nonpartisan leadership programs primarily in our state offices (currently Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania).
CPL was founded by a broad and diverse group of progressive leaders from around the country who saw crucial gaps in training, mentorship, coaching, and support for progressive campaign, organization, community, policy and political leaders.
Our Training Programs

State Fellowships - 9-months of intensive training for 40-60 of the top leaders in each state, including weekend workshops, individual and small group coaching, project-based work, networking and mentorship.
New Leaders Program - Connects talented youth of color and GBLT youth from across the country with paid positions at leading progressive organizations and provides leadership training, mentorship and coaching.
Partnership Trainings - Joint training programs with local and national progressive organizations.
Springboard Trainings - Intensive weekend training for activists, campaign staff and future candidates that provide skills and resources to win electoral efforts and build long-term power.

Long-Term, Comprehensive Leadership Training
CPL focuses on providing comprehensive, long-term leadership development for progressive leaders across the country.
Our programs utilize a variety of techniques, including interactive workshops, mentorship, leadership coaching, field work, and peer networking and support.
In our programs, we focus on a select set of political leadership areas, including:
- Progressive Philosophy, Vision and Values
- Strategic and Campaign Planning
- Communications and Messaging
- Fundraising
- Policy Leadership
- Collaborative Leadership
Diverse Leaders Creating Change
CPL works in targeted states across the country, including Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio, as well as Washington, D.C.
In each area, CPL targets and recruits leaders from communities which have traditionally lacked access to political power, including women, people of color, and GLBT individuals.
Our diverse set of leaders include individuals who are working at every level of political involvement, including:
- Future Candidates, Elected Officials, Appointees and Campaign Professionals
- Organization Leaders
- Community Organizers and Activists
- Policy, Government and Media Leaders
Across CPL's long-term leadership programs, 60% of our participants have been women and almost 50% people of color. In addition, a third of our trainees had never been involved in a political campaign before the trainings.
The diversity of our alumni reflect CPL's deep-rooted commitment to engage new leaders in the progressive movement.
