Dan Wofford

2007 Pennsylvania Faculty Member

Location: Malvern, Pennsylvania

Program: 2007 Pennsylvania Fellowship

Dan Wofford brings to CPL a long history of public service and civic involvement in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.   He has worked on Capitol Hill, served in the Governor’s Office in Harrisburg, helped run several statewide campaigns over the past twenty years, managed a non-profit organization and run for elected office himself.  He currently works as an independent strategic planning and fundraising consultant.

In 2002, Dan ran for Congress in the then newly created PA 6th Congressional District, which includes parts of Chester, Montgomery and Berks counties. He won the Democratic primary in a contested election then lost to Republican Jim Gerlach by 51 to 49 percent.  He raised over $1.9 million in a campaign that focused on fiscal responsibility and long-term investment in education, health care and infrastructure to promote sustained economic growth.

Prior to running for office, Dan served as Director of the Philadelphia Education Fund's College Access Program for five years. The program provides college preparation services to more than 3,000 low-income Philadelphia public school students annually and offers college scholarships to some 250 high school graduates each year.

As member of Governor Casey’s senior staff from 1987 to 1991, Dan had primary responsibility for education policy and also directed the Governor’s Policy Office, overseeing numerous other initiatives.  He also served for two years as a legislative aide to U.S. Rep. Peter Kostmayer (PA 8th Congressional District) before attending the Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned a J.D. in 1983.

The son of former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford -- who helped found the Peace Corps while serving as an adviser to President Kennedy and directed AmeriCorps under President Clinton -- Dan served as Chairman of Citizens for Senator Wofford and senior strategist on Senator Wofford’s two U.S. Senate races from 1991to 1994.

Dan lives in Charlestown Township, Chester County with his wife Sarah Peck and two school age children.  He serves on the Board of City Year Philadelphia and the Red Cross Service Delivery Committee and was the Founding Chairman of Chester County Futures.
