CPL Spotlight:
Anna Perng
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Program: 2007 Pennsylvania Fellow
Profession: Development Officer
Fellowship Track: Future Non-Profit Leader |
How have you been a leader in you community?
The United States is extraordinary. Growing up as a daughter of immigrants, I've seen how our country helps people to thrive. Having worked in nonprofits serving impoverished communities, I am constantly reminded that many people – through sudden illness, disability, personal tragedy, or loss of a job – can slip through the cracks with devastating and sometimes irreversible consequences. Public service keeps me honest with myself about how much others are sharing in my prosperity. The experiences I've had through public service teach me about who I am and who I am becoming.
What personal values most shape your political beliefs?
Nina Ahmad tells me, "Everybody has power. Even if you have a little bit, that's still power. Learn how to use it and make a difference in your community." Recognizing the world from a position of privilege and of gratitude will help you see possibilities and opportunities. I also believe it's important to cherish the people who reach out to you and help you along the way, and in turn, give that encouragement and support to someone else.
What long-term change do you want to help bring to your community?
I'd like to see our community continue to benefit from diverse leadership that works together to address the needs of the most vulnerable people of our community.
What attracted you to the Center for Progressive Leadership?
The Center for Progressive Leadership is an incubator for diverse talent and leadership. CPL makes real the promises of equal opportunity by training diverse, emerging leaders to understand the issues affecting our community and by empowering them with political knowledge.
How is the Fellowship helping you reach your goals?
I am confident that Center for Progressive Leadership staff and alumni will be my lifelong friends, collaborators, and partners in the progressive movement.
What did you get out of the CPL Fellowship?
The Center for Progressive Leadership conducts its Fellowship programs on nights and weekends, which fits my full-time work schedule. Through the Fellowship program, I'm learning how to channel my ideals into concrete goals and objectives. I'm also gaining a greater understanding about local and statewide politics, which is important for emerging leaders who want to be efficient and effective in their advocacy.
